My eleven-year-old’s room is in a pretty sad state: Beatrix Potter curtains, pale pink walls, scattered piles of forgotten toys, and stacks and stacks of books… It doesn’t match the young woman she’s becoming. After a long day of middle school, ballet practice, and an evening chatting with friends on FaceTime, the last thing she wants is to cozy up in a room that looks like it belongs to a toddler.

So when she spotted The Girl’s Guide to Your Dream Room by Sherry Kyle in my pile of review books, she snatched it and disappeared. For hours.

The next thing I knew, she was sorting through her stuff. “Do you think we could get rid of some of these toys? I think I’m ready to part with the dollhouse. It takes up so much space. I’d like a desk.” Her eyes lit up. “With a loft bed, like on page 86. And new curtains. I found the perfect shade on the color-wheel.”

“Okay. Maybe. We’ll think about it. Sounds kind of expensive. But a definite yes on the toys.”

“I know, Mom. The first step is to clear out the junk. Maybe we can have a garage sale to help pay for it, like the book suggests.”

I smiled. Hadn’t I been telling her that for years?

Once I retrieved the book from my daughter’s clutches, I read through it myself. Filled with short stories, quizzes, simple crafts, Bible stories, and cute drawings, I can see why this book appeals to her so much. Primarily about decorating, Sherry Kyle also uses the stories to teach important heart lessons and share Biblical truth. It reads much like the popular American Girls Guides, but with an added element of faith.

As I gaze around at the cluttered, babyish room, I know we have our work cut out for us. But it’s time, and when we’re done, my daughter will have a room she’ll be proud to call her own.

If you have a pre-teen daughter, she might also enjoy Sherry Kyle’s other girl’s book: The Christian Girl’s Guide to Style. She’ll love it. Trust me. Every time I go to strip the sheets off my daughter’s bed, I find it stashed under the covers next to her flashlight. Sigh. Now it has a friend!

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book for free from Legacy Press Kids for the purpose of review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
